TOMS RIVER – There were some scary moments in the township this afternoon after reports surfaced that a young girl was hit by a van while she was riding her bicycle.
Toms River Police Spokesperson Jillian Messina confirmed that the 12-year-old was on her bike traveling north on Vaughn Avenue at Somerset Drive when she was struck by the vehicle shortly before 3 p.m.
Multiple units responded to the scene. The driver of the 21Plus van, 34-year-old Charles Santoriello, Jr. was not at fault for the accident and was not charged, according to Messina.
The girl, who was conscious at the time of the accident, was taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center as a precautionary measure.
There were no other injuries reported.
The accident is being investigated by Toms River Traffic Safety Officer Bartoshek.
