
LAKEWOOD – A young boy is dead after being hit by a vehicle Thursday night in the Catskills.
Multiple news outlets reported that four-year-old Shmuel Gelis was killed after an ice cream struck him around 7:30 p.m. Shmuel, whose family recently moved from Lakewood to Toms River, was riding a bicycle at Birchwood Estates, a neighborhood in the Sackett Lake area of Thompson, New York, when he was hit.
The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, where they found the Hatzolah volunteer ambulance service treating the boy. He was taken to Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris, New York, where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the ice cream truck, who was not identified, stayed at the scene.
The Lakewood Scoop reported that the boy’s funeral took place 10:30 a.m. today at 7th Street Bais Olam in Lakewood.
