TOMS RIVER – Tragedy struck on July 4th as a serious motorcycle crash left one man dead.
Toms River Police confirm the incident which was first reported by Ocean County Scanner News.
Photos obtained by Jersey Shore Online through various sources showed a large amount of blood splattered on the roadway at the scene.
Toms River Police Spokesperson Jillian Messina said shortly after 5 p.m., multiple police units responded to Route 37 East, just west of Vaughn Avenue, for a motorcycle crash with the driver not breathing.
34-year-old Shawn Mathewson of Kearny was operating a 2004 Yamaha motorcycle when he rear ended a 2016 Crysler driven by 18-year-old Ayesha Mirandaalves of Newark.
Authorities said Mirandaalves had braked as traffic ahead of her stopped.
Mathewson succumbed to his injuries after being taken to Community Medical Center.
Police said the accident is being investigated by Toms River Police Traffic Safety Officer Terry Warren and was assisted by Safety Officer Steve Schwartz and Officer Ryan Fitzgerald.
The Ocean County Sheriff Department and State Diversion Team also responded.
Traffic heading towards Seaside was backed up for miles as one of the lanes on Route 37 East has to be shut down during the investigation and cleanup.
