TOMS RIVER – A woman was critically injured after she was hit by a car while crossing Old Freehold Road with her two children, police said.

According to police, the mother was pushing her infant in a stroller and had her 2-year-old son walking with her when they were crossing from the parking lot by Attilio’s to the corner of Riverside Cemetery. They were hit while in the crosswalk around 2:45 p.m. on April 6.

The driver was southbound on Route 166 and turning left onto Old Freehold Road. The driver told police he turned when he saw a break in the traffic, however did not see the woman pushing the stroller.

The mother suffered serious injuries and was brought to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. She is currently in critical condition, police said. Her son suffered an injury to his hand. Police said the stroller overturned, but no statements were made whether the infant suffered any injuries.

The driver was issued a summons for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
