TOMS RIVER – A fast-moving fire with heavy smoke damaged an apartment unit on Presidential Boulevard, officials said.

Officers from the Toms River Police Department as well as Toms River Fire Companies No.1 and No.2 were dispatched to the Emerald Apartments around 10:15 p.m. on March 9 for a reported fire alarm and smoke condition.

An active fire was found in the living room on the first floor of the apartment and was quickly spreading, Chief Inspector of the Toms River Bureau of Fire Prevention John Novak said. The surrounding units were evacuated while firefighters extinguished the flames.

Toms River Police Department Spokesperson Jillian Messina told Jersey Shore Online that no injuries were reported.

The fire was investigated by the Toms River Bureau of Fire Prevention and they determined the cause to be accidental, with damage to electrical wiring above the sheetrock ceiling in the basement laundry room which cannot be ruled out as a possible cause.
