Ebike Driver Dies After Being Struck By Car In Toms River

  TOMS RIVER – A driver on an electric bicycle died after being struck by a vehicle on Route 37, police said.

  The name of the deceased is not being released at this time, but police said it was a 33-year-old man from Little Egg Harbor. He was riding on Route 37 East near the intersection of River Drive at around 8 a.m. this morning, said Jillian Messina, spokesperson for the Toms River Police Department.

  The bicyclist was heading west in the shoulder when he suddenly made a left turn into traffic and was struck by a vehicle in the center lane of the highway, she said. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene of the collision.

  The bicyclist suffered severe injuries and was brought to Community Medical Center by Toms River EMS where he succumbed to his injuries.

  Toms River Traffic Safety Officer Cpl. Robert Westfall is investigating the incident. The Ocean County Sheriff’s Department Crime Scene Investigation Unit and Hatzalah Volunteer EMS also assisted at the scene.
