TOMS RIVER – A piece of construction equipment caught fire Friday morning due to a mechanical failure, Toms River fire officials said.

This morning, Stations 25 and 26 responded to a reported fire involving construction equipment on the BASF Property.

According to Matthew Janora, chief inspector with the Toms River Bureau of Fire Prevention, a skid steer that had caught fire was found in a wooded area.

The fire was found over a half of a mile off of the property’s paved roadway. Responding units used the fire access roads on the property to extinguish the fire. The New Jersey Forest Fire Service also responded, officials said.

Janora said after preliminary investigation, the fire appeared to be caused by a mechanical failure, and did not appear to be suspicious in nature.

The fire is being investigated by Inspector Britton of the Toms River Bureau of Fire Prevention.
