BARNEGAT – Police are currently investigating a mysterious shooting incident that occurred late at night in a public park.
Around 10:30 p.m. on March 13, officers from the Barnegat Police Department were dispatched to Sextant Drive for a report of a 13-year-old with a gunshot wound to the foot.
The juvenile told police that they were at the public park on Bilge Street when he heard a “pop” and realized that he had been shot in the foot. He stated how he was alone in the park and never saw anyone. He was quickly brought to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for treatment.
According to police, there was no blood at the park and no other evidence of a shooting happening. In addition, no one in the neighborhood reported gunshots that night, and police did not recover any firearms.
Currently the situation is still under investigation, but police believe this was an isolated, accidental shooting. All who are involved, which are juveniles, have been identified.
