LACEY – The average motorized shopping scooter goes about 5 mph, perhaps a little faster. So this couple apparently counted on a collective stupefaction of fellow shoppers, or the semi-cloak of darkness in a usually lit parking lot, when they boldly stole two Walmart motorized scooters and rode them away, west on Haines Street.
It was 1:58 a.m. Aug. 2 when Lacey Township Police officers Martin Julian and Dimitri Tsarnas responded to the Walmart on Route 9 in Lanoka Harbor. A male and female left the parking lot on the motorized shopping carts, valued at $1,000.
Police say the store manager was notified. It’s unclear how much a head start the scooter bandits had before police arrived.
Authorities are checking surveillance footage for clues.
