JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST – Complaints and concerns have been registered all over social media about loud “booms” coming from somewhere, most likely the military base.
However, Airman First Class Zachary Martyn, of the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst public affairs office, said only small arms fire, not mortar, practice is happening on the ranges today.
The Ocean County Sheriff’s Office said, instead, that military training is happening at the Warren Grove Range Bombing Range in Chatsworth. They are asking that people do not call 9-1-1 to report the bomb sounds.
The New Jersey State Police are detonating ordnance today until 4 p.m. as well.
Cloud cover can amplify and carry sound; however, there’s light, partly cloudy conditions over much of the area today.
