The report was unfounded, whether a mistake or hoax.
Authorities were called to search for a boat in distress on the Toms River around 8 p.m. Wednesday. First responders from Pine Beach, Ocean Gate, Berkeley and Lacey all arrived, by suspended their search by 9:30 p.m., when no evidence of anyone in distress was found.
No evidence of a reportedly distressed 20-foot motorboat headed in the direction of Seaside Heights was found.
