BRICK – The recent Gun Turn-In event hosted but the Brick Police and Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office (OCPO) resulted in a total of 13 guns, 10 long guns (rifles) and 3 handguns, turned in to officials for safe disposal. Officials remarked that all of these items will be destroyed.
The Gun Turn-In was held at the Brick Township Police Headquarters on May 5 as a way for the Brick Police and the OCPO to provide Ocean County residents with a safe disposal option for their unwanted firearms.
According to officials, the guns turned in at the event will help prevent future tragedy such as burglary, violent crime, or death of an innocent person.
Seven individuals took part in the turn-in program. All participants were told to bring their firearms in a closed case or package inside of their locked trunk, unloaded.
“The most common reasons heard for the turn-ins were that they had received the firearm after the death of a loved one or that they purchased the firearm many years ago and now no longer had interest in keeping the weapon. All expressed their appreciation for the convenient option to dispose of the firearms,” stated a release from the OCPO.
The Gun Turn-In was a success and has even spurred other local police chiefs to inquire about joining in the program with the OCPO.
