MANTOLOKING – A Manahawkin man was shot and killed while authorities executed a warrant for his arrest at a Mantoloking home.

Edward M. Walsh, 39, was being served a warrant at his last known location, 914 Barnegat Lane, when police entered the home. A scuffle ensued, and police shot Walsh. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Walsh was wanted for kidnapping, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and theft of the victim (his girlfriend).

“Edward Walsh had committed the above acts against his girlfriend on Sunday, November 11, left her at her Sayreville residence, then stole her vehicle and drove Lacey Township,” Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said.

Lacey Police alerted authorities that Walsh was at the Mantoloking location. He was there because he was previously married to a family member of the prior owner.

On Tuesday, three Mantoloking police officers, one Ocean County Sheriff’s officer with K-9 officer Kane, and one Bay Head officer went to the Barnegat Lane home. After 45 minutes and permission of the current homeowner, police entered the home.

Walsh, within 20 feet of the officers, was wielding a knife that he refused to drop. Officers released K-9 Kane, who was stabbed by Walsh. Officers fired at Walsh. Authorities said Walsh has a self-inflicted knife wound across his neck.

An autopsy of Walsh is pending.

“K-9 Officer Kane was transported to Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in Tinton Falls and thankfully is expected to make a full recovery and be released tomorrow,” Billhimer reported.

Since a sheriff’s officer was involved, the OCPO contacted the NJ State Police to the scene.

“We thank the State Police for their assistance.  Anyone with information are encouraged to contact Detective Brant Uricks or Lindsay Woodfield of Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, Major Crimes Unit at (732) 929-2027,” Billhimer said.

The case, since deadly force was used, is under investigation by the New Jersey Attorney General’s office, as per state law.
