SOUTHAMPTON – A “microearthquake” hit a rural Burlington County town Thursday morning.

The United States Geological Survey recorded a 1.6 magnitude earthquake in Southampton June 21 around 12:30 a.m., near the Leisuretown section of the township, a 2,255 55+ adult community.

The USGS classifies earthquakes registering 2.0 or lower as microearthquakes, those that aren’t generally felt on the surface but are picked up by seismograph.
