ASBURY PARK – After a week-long trial, an Asbury Park man has been convicted of stabbing his ex-girlfriend in 2023, officials said.
Amando Miguel-Ortiz, 37, was found guilty of first-degree Attempted Murder and third and fourth-degree weapons offenses.
On March 6, 2023, around 5:15 p.m., an assault was reported at a home at 600 Second Avenue. Police found the victim, who is also the mother of Miguel-Ortiz’s child, and brought her to a local hospital for emergency treatment of a head injury. Shortly afterwards, Miguel-Ortiz was found outside a home about a half-mile away, 400 Langford Street, and he was taken into custody without incident.
According to officials, the victim was cooking at a friend’s home when Miguel-Ortiz entered armed with a knife. Miguel-Ortiz then stabbed the victim once in the torso before grabbing her by the hair and stabbing her again in the back of the head. The victim’s friend intervened and subsequently Miguel-Ortiz fled the scene.
Miguel-Ortiz remained incarcerated at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution (MCCI) pending the trial.
Sentencing in the case has been tentatively scheduled for May 10, when Miguel-Ortiz will face a term of up to 20 years in state prison.
