MONMOUTH COUNTY – Police charged a man with sneaking drugs into jail and giving them to an inmate which resulted in an overdose death.
Alvino Hinton, 47, of Long Branch, was charged with the overdose death of inmate David Egner, 32, of Toms River, on August 18. Hinton was charged with first-degree Strict Liability for a Drug-Induced Death, third-degree Distribution of a Controlled Dangerous Substance, third-degree Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance and third-degree Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance with Intent to Distribute.
According to authorities, officers at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution (MCCI) found Egner non-responsive on the floor of his cell on August 17 around 9 a.m.
Medical first aid was immediately rendered and Egner was brought to a local hospital for treatment. He was diagnosed as suffering from heroin/fentanyl poisoning and later on the same day was pronounced deceased, officials said.
Investigation led police to discovering Hinton had smuggled the drugs into MCCI and distributed the drugs to Egner while he was a fellow inmate.
Charges are merely accusations until proven in a court of law.
