HOLMDEL – As of approximately 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 24, a bus caught on fire has shut down a section of the Garden State Parkway (GSP) near exit 116 and is currently backing up traffic. The southbound GSP near the area in Holmdel is currently closed.
Paramedic officials at the scene reported several explosions due to blown tires.
The Garden State Parkway twitter account posted: “Bus fire on the southbound local lanes at milepost 116.7, just south of the Keyport \ Holmdel Road overpass. The local lanes are closed. The express lanes are open but there are rubbernecking delays.”
The tweet was later updated to confirm that no injuries were reported and that “All passengers are waiting for the arrival of relief bus.”
According to 511nj.org, the fire was reported around 9:37 a.m.
Since then, the passengers, mostly senior citizens, made it off the bus.
The bus caught fire near the Holmdel Road and Hillcrest intersection, according to officials. It is currently pulled over, engulfed in flames, near exit 116 in Holmdel.
“The express lanes are open, but there are rubbernecking delays,” according to a tweet from the New Jersey Turnpike Authority.
