MANCHESTER  –  An 87-year-old woman is left in critical condition after being struck by a car in a parking lot on Wednesday morning, police said.

When officers arrived at the scene around 8:54 a.m., they found Marie Ryerson of Whiting injured, lying on the ground in the middle of the parking lot aisle at the ShopRite on Route 70.

Ryerson sustained injuries on the right side of her body as well as possible serious internal injuries, police said. She was quickly brought to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for treatment and is currently listed in critical but stable condition.

According to investigation, a Chevrolet Trax was pulling forward out of the parking space and turning towards the left. As it moved forward, Ryerson was walking towards the ShopRite and came into the Chevrolet’s path of travel. As a result, the front driver’s side of the car struck Ryerson.

The driver of the Chevrolet, 82-year-old, Peter Stasinski, and the passenger, 80-year-old Virginia Stasinski, both of Whiting, were not harmed in the crash.

At this time, the incident is still under investigation. However, authorities believe driver error is the primary contributing factor of the crash.

Assisting at the scene were EMTs from the Manchester Township Division of Emergency Services.

The crash is being investigated by Patrolman Michael O’Hara of the department’s Traffic Safety Unit.
