MANCHESTER – Police are looking into a multi-vehicle crash that occurred on the night of New Year’s Eve on Route 70 in Whiting.

A 17-year old male from New Lisbon was traveling west on Route 70 in a 2001 Kia Sportage when he attempted to pass multiple vehicles unsuccessfully. The young driver tried to merge back into the westbound lane of travel when he noticed oncoming traffic approaching, but he lost control of his vehicle. Crossing the center line, the driver veered into oncoming traffic colliding with 36-year old David Demsey of Atco in a 2005 Infiniti Q56 SUV and a 17-year old female driver in a 2006 Mazda 616.

The police observed that all three vehicles had extensive front end damage and air bag deployment as a result of the crash. The vehicles and debris from the crash obstructed the area, so police shut down Route 70 between County Route 539 and County Route 530 in Pemberton Township for about three hours, while the crash was dealt with.

The young female driver was transported to Lourdes Hospital in Browns Mills to be treated for her injuries and both the male driver and Demsey refused treatment.

Assisting at the scene were members of the Whiting Volunteer Fire Department, EMTs from Quality Medical Transport, officers from the Pemberton Township Police Department, and members of the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

This accident remains under investigation by Ptl. Marc Micciulla of the department’s Patrol Bureau. Anyone with information is asked to contact Ptl. Micciulla at 732-657-6111 ext. 6384.
