MANCHESTER – An Egg Harbor City man is in serious critical condition tonight after being hit by another vehicle on Schoolhouse Road this afternoon.
Sean M. Malmstrom, 37, was taken by medivac to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune after sustaining life-threatening injuries. He was driving his motorized scooter when he was hit by a Volkswagen Jetta exiting the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church parking lot, driven by 74-year-old Whiting resident, Carol A. Gibson. Police said she failed to yield to oncoming traffic.
Officers found the Tao scooter lodged underneath the Jetta’s vehicle. Police said Malmstrom was wearing a DOT-approved helmet, but no other protective gear.
Patrolman Jesse Hoydis of the Manchester Township Police Traffic Safety Unit is investigating.
The department was assisted by investigators from the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, as well as the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigations (CSI) Unit, EMTS from both the Whiting Volunteer First Aid Squad and Quality Medical Transport as well as paramedics from MONOC.
