MANCHESTER – Two people were taken to the hospital after a dump truck rear-ended a car, causing a four-car crash Monday afternoon, police said.
According to police, a Kia was attempting to make a left from Route 539 onto Horicon Avenue when it was rear-ended by a dump truck. This pushed the Kia forward, where it collided with a Toyota Prius. The Prius then spun out and struck a GMC Savana work van.
The driver of the Kia, 39-year-old Grace Newchurch of Toms River, was trapped inside her vehicle. She was rescued by first responders and was brought to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune by a Manchester Township Division of Emergency Services ambulance. She is currently listed in stable condition, police said.
In addition, the driver of the Toyota, 67-year-old Anthony Foti of Ogdensburg, NY, was transported via Manchester Township Division of Emergency Services Ambulance to Community Medical Center in Toms River for treatment and evaluation of non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the dump truck, 57-year-old Noel Rivera-Gonzalez of Sayreville, and the driver of the GMC, 42-year-old Steven Greenberg of Forked River, did not report any injuries.
County Route 539 was partially closed causing traffic delays while officers conducted the investigation.
Although investigation is still ongoing, authorities believe the driver of the dump truck was not paying attention when the Kia in front of him slowed down to make a turn.
Assisting at the scene were EMTs and firefighters from the Manchester Township Division of Emergency Services, as well as, the New Jersey State Police.
This crash is being investigated by Patrolman Michael O’Hara of the department’s Traffic Safety Section.
