BRICK – A man who shot himself after firing on police has succumbed to his injuries, officials reported.

Corey Johnson, 28, of Brick, had allegedly broken into his ex-wife’s home on the morning of August 14. The woman was notified via her Ring doorbell. She left her job and called 911.

Police said when she pulled into the parking lot of her Judy Court residence, Johnson had already left the home and proceeded to pull his car in front of the victim’s car, blocking her in.

A Brick Police Officer arrived on scene and as he exited the patrol car, Johnson fired one shot in that direction, hitting the windshield. The officer suffered minor injuries to his arm from glass shards.

Immediately after firing the weapon at the officer, Johnson turned the gun on himself and shot himself in the head.

Officers provided first aid to Johnson and he was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. He succumbed to his injuries at 10:15 p.m. on August 16, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said.

The officer was transported to Ocean University Medical Center in Brick Township, where he was treated for his injuries and released.

At this time, the incident remains under investigation.
