BRICK – A Point Pleasant Beach man died after being struck by a vehicle on Route 88 westbound near Post Road.
The incident occurred around 10:15 p.m. on Saturday, August 3 according to the Brick Township Police Department.
Police said 72-year-old Arthur W. Burke of Point Pleasant Beach died from his injuries sustained in the crash.
44-year-old John Metevier of Brick, who was not injured, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Corvette.
His passenger, 35-year-old Tina-Marie Dillon of Brick complained of back , neck and foot pain and sustained some minor lacerations.
The car was traveling west on Route 88 between Bruce Street and Post Road. Burke was attempting to walk across the highway south to north, approximately 100 feet east of Post Road, directly in the path of Metevier’s car.
Police said that Metevier attempted to avoid Burke but was unable to and struck him with the right front bumper of his vehicle. The impact caused Burke to strike the windshield. Burke fell from the vehicle, onto the curb and grass area on the side of the road suffering from a severe head and internal trauma.
Burke was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.
Dillon suffered minor injuries and was transported to Ocean Medical Center – Brick Hospital for treatment.
Route 88 between the interchange and Jack Martin Boulevard and Post Road was closed for several hours. Township Police Traffic Safety Officer David Thergesen and Detective Michael Proto of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office are conducting the ongoing investigation.
