POINT PLEASANT – The Social Security Administration will not call asking for a social security number. Ever.

Point Pleasant Police are telling residents a well-worn scam has resurfaced. Scammers, posing as SSA officials, are threatening to pull benefits and demanding bank account and social security numbers over the phone.

Because of “spoofing” technology, they also appear to be calling from the SSA. They are not.

Do not give out bank account numbers, social security numbers, or any other sensitive information to anyone over the phone. Do not wire money, pay with gift cards, or send cash to anyone demanding such things over the phone.

Those who are concerned their benefits are in jeopardy should hang up and call the Social Security Administration directly or visit ssa.gov/agency/contact.

Victims can also file a report with the Point Pleasant Police Department at 732-892-0060.
