BERKELEY – Two Bayville families are now homeless after a shed fire quickly spread, leaving both houses uninhabitable. A third house suffered minor damage in the incident.
Berkeley Township Police said the May 14 blaze started in a shed behind the home at 100 Moorage Avenue. Investigators believe it was caused by an electrical issue.
When officers arrived, the shed was completely engulfed in flames and was spreading to the house next door at 102 Moorage Avenue. To make matters worse, the blaze then spread to the home at 100 Moorage Avenue and even caused some damage to the exterior of 104 Moorage Avenue.
All of the residents of the homes were able to evacuate safely along with their pets.
According to police, Bayville, Manitou Park, Pinewald and Forked River Fire Departments all responded and battled the blaze while Bayville First Aid and Berkeley EMS also responded to assist.
Firefighters were successful at extinguishing the blaze at both homes.
The Berkeley Twp Fire Official along with the Ocean County Fire Marshall also responded.
While the cause is believed to be an electrical issue, a full probe is underway.
