BERKELEY – A Trenton man faces a raft of charges after allegedly stealing a car in Bayville late last month. A full investigation continues after police found dozens of key fobs for other vehicles that don’t belong to the suspect.
Berkeley Township Police confirm 21-year-old Marquarn Mcquitta was arrested following the September 23rd incident.
Police said their patrol division received a call in the middle of the night regarding a stolen vehicle in the Millcreek section of Bayville. Police went to the scene on Point Pleasant Avenue and Oak Street where the victim told them that his spare key had been stolen weeks earlier. He also told police he saw the suspect in his vehicle backing out of his own driveway, stealing it.
The man tried to chase the suspect with no success and called the police. The thief abandoned the car while it was moving and took off on foot. Police brought in K9 units and backup to search for him.
According to police, Detective Joseph Santoro was able to identify the vehicle the suspect used prior to stealing the car. They impounded it and were able to find the identity of the owner.
On September 24th, with assistance from the Lacey Township Police Department, Mcquitta was arrested without incident at the Cornerstone Apartment Complex near Lacey Road. He was charged with car theft and employing a juvenile in the commission of a crime.
Police said Mcquitta also had several outstanding warrants from a number of law enforcement agencies throughout the state ranging from theft, forgery, criminal trespass and stolen property.
Mcquitta was taken to the Ocean County Jail in Toms River.
Thanks to the probe, the Berkeley Township Police Department have recovered a number of key fobs for various makes and models of cars.
