BERKELEY – A 20-year-old woman was arrested after driving under the influence and colliding into a pole on Route 9, police said.
The incident happened early this morning around 1:45 a.m. Officers from the Berkeley Township Police Department responded to the scene.
According to police, the driver was traveling northbound on Route 9 when she struck the utility pole at the corner of Route 9 and Buckley Lane. The pole was completely severed from the base and pushed into Buckley Lane.
Police said the crash caused a power surge shutting down three traffic lights on Route 9 at Korman Road, Iger Way and Station Road.
The driver, identified as Leaa Mayer, 20 of Whiting, was arrested and charged for driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, careless driving, failure to maintain lane and failure to produce a required document (insurance card.) Mayer was later released.
Police stated that there were no injuries reported from the crash.
Charges are merely accusations until proven in a court of law.
