BERKELEY – A fundraiser was started for a teenager who died after being struck by a car while walking home from work early Sunday morning.
Silverio Montes Ponce, 17, a Central Regional High School student, was walking home from a shift at 3 a.m., according to published reports. When crossing Route 37 in Toms River, he was struck by a vehicle and later succumbed to his injuries.
“Silverio had a heart of gold and always gave what he could, especially to his family. He worked hard late to help his family financially. Silverio loved drawing, singing, and being with his family and friends,” the GoFundMe read.
A statement from Central Regional read “The entire staff has been notified and the district’s crisis team is available to assist students in need. It is difficult to predict how students will react to such a tragic event. We encourage parents to talk to their children to ensure they are okay. The entire Central Regional family offers our sincere condolences to the student’s family and friends.”
The student was remembered during a moment of silence at the Berkeley Township Council meeting on Jan. 27.
