BERKELEY – A head-on collision left two people injured and a car engulfed in flames, police said.
The crash occurred around 11:07 a.m. December 12 near 340 Atlantic City Boulevard.
According to police, 77-year-old Frank Schmitt Jr. of Ocean Gate was attempting to make a left-hand turn north onto Atlantic City Boulevard when he went into the southbound lane hitting a Ford Escort head-on.
Police said the impact caused Schmitt to jump the west curb before leaving the roadway and coming to a final rest on the front grass of TD Bank. The Ford Escort jumped the eastern curb of the highway and hit a road sign before coming to a stop in the Kearny Bank parking lot.
Berkeley Township EMS brought the driver of the Ford to Community Medical Center for injuries sustained from the crash. Additionally, Bayville Volunteer EMS brought Schmitt and his passenger to Community Medical Center for leg pain.
Authorities said that the Ford started to smoke heavily shortly after officers arrived on scene. The car then became fully engulfed in flames. A portion of Atlantic City Blvd between Korman Road and Frederick Drive was temporarily closed as a result and Bayville Fire Company quickly extinguished the fire.
Schmitt was issued a summons for Careless Driving and both cars were towed from the scene by Jersey Shore Towing.
