Campfire Causes 200-Acre Wildfire In Ocean County

  BERKELEY – A wildfire that broke out Monday evening in Berkeley Township is now 70% contained, officials said.

  The blaze was reported around 4:45 p.m. in the area of Fisher’s Pit. The fire has burned about 200 acres, officials stated.

  After thorough investigation, authorities have determined that the fire was accidental, and was due to a campfire that was improperly extinguished.

  Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer acknowledged the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Arson Squad, New Jersey Forest Fire Service, Ocean County Fire Marshal’s Office, Berkeley Township Police Department Detective Bureau, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, for their cooperative assistance in connection with this investigation
