Berkeley Will See Closure Of Bayview Ave. For Construction

BERKELEY – Berkeley Township officials announced that Bayview Avenue will be temporarily closed between Lavallette Avenue and Lake Drive while construction is taking place.

The township will be replacing a culvert that runs underneath Bayview.

“The culvert will be replaced to increase the amount of tidal flow to the marsh on the west side of Bayview Avenue. The culverts in place now allow water into that marsh, but allow tide waters to recede too slowly. That keeps water on the marsh for too long and over many years this excess flooding has killed marsh vegetation and made the site waterlogged. A larger culvert will allow this water to move off the marsh more quickly,” stated Refuge Manager Virginia Rettig.

Work is expected to begin around Oct. 1 and last through Oct. 29. Access to Bayview Ave will be cut off at all times during construction, even nights and weekends, according to officials. Signs will be posted to safely direct traffic and all Bayview Avenue businesses will remain open during the closure.

“In accordance with the Road Opening Permit, signage warning of the planned construction and the road closure will be placed along Bayview Avenue, Veeder Lane, and Ocean Gate Drive in advance of project initiation,” stated the township via social media.
