BERKELEY – A sheen spotted on the surface of a lagoon in the Berkeley Shores neighborhood was believed to be hydraulic fluid, police said.
A resident called police at around 8 a.m. on April 2, saying there was an oil spill in the lagoon behind Carlyle Drive. The Bayville Fire Department also responded.
Officials said the leak was believed to be hydraulic fluid which was washed into the lagoons by rainwater through the storm drains. It was estimated to have spread between Bowsprit Drive and Allen Road.
“The presence of the fluid is not deemed a hazard at this time,” police said.
The Berkeley Township Hazmat Team, the New Jersey State Police Marine Unit, and the Department of Environmental Protection were all advised.
