LITTLE EGG HARBOR – The New Jersey Forest Fire Service has confirmed that the Log Swamp Wildfire that burned 1,607 acres over the weekend has been fully contained.
Officials said the fire broke out around 10 a.m. Saturday, and affected areas of the Bass River State Forest, the Stafford Forge Wildlife Management Area and the Warren Grove Bombing Range.
As of 8 a.m. Sunday, the fire was 100% contained. Despite the substantial rainfall the area experienced overnight, the area of the fire only received 0.04 inches of precipitation.
Officials said that a prescribed burn at the Warren Grove Bombing Range that was completed in February significantly helped stop the fire and contain it.
New Jersey Forest Fire Service said staff will remain on scene to continue improving containment lines and monitor the area to ensure public safety. Route 539 has reopened; however, it is asked to use caution when driving in the area as firefighters may periodically conduct work along the roadside. Smoke conditions may remain for several days, officials said.
No residential structures were threatened by the fire and no evacuations were needed. Officials said no injuries were reported.
At this time, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
