BRICK – If an employee of a utility company comes to your door, police urge you to send them away and call 911.
There have been multiple incidents of someone pretending to be from a utility knocking on a door, and telling residents that there’s an issue with their service. Then, they distract you while others sneak into your home.
Here’s what to do:
- Don’t leave your home or let them in.
- Call the police.
- Call the number on your monthly statement – not the number they give you.
- If you have an actual issue with your utility, call the number on your monthly statement. Don’t talk to them about it.
“Utility companies DO NOT have employees going door to door regarding your monthly usage or service bill,” police said. “If you believe that you were a target of a scam, please contact Brick Police at 732-262-1100. Residents are reminded solicitors MUST have a permit with the clerk’s office for door to door solicitation.”
