Police Warn Residents Of ATM Scam

POINT PLEASANT – After receiving several reports, the Point Pleasant Police Department is warning residents of recent debit card frauds where cash is being withdrawn due to the victim’s card possibly being compromised by a skimming device.

A skimmer is a card reader that can be disguised to look like part of an ATM, police said. This attachment collects card numbers and PIN codes, allowing suspects to replicate it.

Here are some tips police provide to avoid your card information from being stolen:

  • Whenever entering your PIN you should use one of your hands to cover the numbers/letters you are keying to protect your password.
  • Always inspect the PIN keypad and Card insert slot for anything unusual, including loose fitting parts, misaligned keys, uneven parts or the use of tape or adhesive. You can also pull on the card reader insert to ensure it is affixed as ATM manufacturers would not make a machine where the reader can be easily pulled off.
  • Check your bank accounts weekly for any unusual activity. If you suspect fraudulent activity, contact your bank as soon as possible and make a report with the Point Pleasant Police Department at 732-892-0060.

At this time, the Point Pleasant Police Department is actively investigating these frauds and are working to confirm the location of the card compromises.
