BRICK – A man was recently reunited with all the people who likely saved his life.
Eighty-two-year-old Carl Schwab was on the phone with his neighbor Roberta Cartwright the evening of Jan. 2. She was asking Carl if he and his wife, Susan, were interested in some of the pulled pork Roberta was making.
But Carl didn’t answer.
Roberta, hearing Carl drop the phone, called to her husband Peter, who immediately drove down the street to the Schwab residence.
In the meantime, Susan had called 911.
Peter rushed in and seeing Carl slumped over in a chair, moved him to the floor and began CPR.
In the meantime, Brick Township Police and EMTs had been dispatched to the home. They—Patrolmen Anthony Chadwick and Mark Storch, and EMTs Anthony Botts, Kyle Matthews and Paul Witham—worked on Carl for 20 minutes and were able to regain a pulse and stabilize him so he could be transported to Ocean Medical Center.
Carl was in treatment for more than a month, having received a pacemaker/defibrillator followed by weeks of rehabilitation. He was home by mid-February.
On March 15, a reunion of sorts took place. The Schwabs welcomed the Cartwrights, Patrolmen Chadwick and Storch and EMTs Botts and Witham into their home to celebrate Carl’s recovery.
“These guys are amazing, and I want to thank them all for saving my husband’s life. You all are wonderful, and my neighbors are wonderful,” Susan Schwab said.
