LAKEWOOD – A 76-year-old township woman is dead after being hit by a car Sunday evening.
Sofia Biernacka was struck on Madison Avenue near Sixth Street around 5:30 p.m. Dec. 9. She sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus, where she succumbed some time later, Lakewood Police Lt. LeRoy Marshall said.
Victor Indiero, 63, of Freehold, was driving the 2017 Hyundai that struck the woman. Police said excessive speed does not appear to be a factor in the accident. He was questioned and released pending further investigation by Lakewood Police’s Traffic Safety Unit and Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office. The New Jersey State Police and Ocean County Sheriff’s Department also assisted.
The vehicle was impounded.
