TOMS RIVER – Piper Perabo, the well-known actress hailing from Toms River, was recently arrested for “civil disobedience” during the confirmation hearing for Brett Kavanaugh’s seat on the US Supreme Court.
Perabo, a Toms River High School North graduate, is known for her roles in films such as “Coyote Ugly” or series like “Notorious”. Apparently acting is not her only passion, as she protested the controversial Supreme Court pick at the hearing on September 4. Perabo and other protesters were forcibly removed from the hearing.
In a tweet, Perabo reacted to her arrest, stating: “I was just arrested for civil disobedience in the Kavanaugh hearings. Many citizens before me have fought for the equal rights of women. I can’t be silent when someone is nominated to the Supreme Court who would take our equal rights away.”
Many fear the appointment of Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court will jeopardize women’s reproductive rights. Some protesters even donned costumes from “The Handmaid’s Tale,” a popular Hulu show based off the Margaret Atwood novel that describes a dystopian future where women have no rights to their own bodies.
“I disrupted the Senate Kavanaugh hearings this morning because Trump is an unindicted co-conspirator in a felony criminal investigation & shouldn’t be allowed to nominate a Justice, til that is resolved. Esp Kavanaugh who believes a President is above the law,” stated Perabo in another tweet.
