LONG BRANCH – An Oakhurst man is dead after being allegedly shot and killed by his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend, police said.
Miguel Leal Camara, 40, of Long Branch, had a restraining order placed against him by an ex-girlfriend. That woman was eating a meal at a Long Branch restaurant at 545 Broadway with her boyfriend Marco Antonio Rosa Moreira, 45, of Oakhurst, and other family members when Camara entered the establishment and shot Moreira in the head.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Camara allegedly attempted to also shoot his ex-girlfriend, but was subdued by restaurant patrons. A passerby outside flagged a Long Branch Police Officer. Upon arriving, the officer witnessed a violent struggle ensuing. Camara attempted to take the officer’s weapon but was unsuccessful. Other officers arrived, subdued and arrested Camara without further incident.
The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office said Camara has been charged with first degree murder, first degree attempted murder, second degree unlawful possession of a weapon, second degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, second degree disarming a law enforcement officer, and fourth degree contempt – violating a domestic violence restraining order.
Camara faces 30 years to life if convicted of first-degree murder, without chance of parole. The other charges, if convicted, carry 18 months to 20 years each.
He is scheduled to have his first appearance before Superior Court Judge David F. Bauman, where formal charges will be read.
Monmouth County Assistant Prosecutor Matthew Bogner is assigned to this case.
“Despite these charges, every defendant is presumed innocent, unless and until found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, following a trial at which the defendant has all of the trial rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and State law,” the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office said.
