FREEHOLD – A Keansburg man with a prior criminal record was sentenced Wednesday to 10 years in a New Jersey state prison for his 2016 arrest for the unlawful possession of multiple firearms, announced Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni.
Kevin Carter, 31, of Keansburg, was found guilty in January following a two-week trial before Monmouth County Superior Court Judge Leslie-Ann Justus. A Monmouth County jury convicted Carter of various charges, including second degree Unlawful Possession of an Assault Firearm, third degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, and fourth degree Possession of a Prohibited Weapon.
The sentence handed down by Monmouth County Superior Court Judge Vincent N. Falcetano, Jr., requires Carter to serve 5 years in prison before he is eligible for parole.
The case stems from an August 17, 2016 incident when Carter boarded a train carrying a large garbage bag filled with 2 large rifles and ammunition, including hollow point bullets. Two conductors on the train saw the contents of the bag and called police. Once Carter learned that the police were contacted, he attempted to pull the train’s emergency break to flee the scene but was ultimately apprehended.
This case was prosecuted by Monmouth County Assistant Prosecutor Joseph Cummings.
Carter represented himself at the trial.
