LAKEWOOD – Lakewood Township Police are asking those who celebrate to lay off drunk driving and fireworks.
Purim is celebrated at sundown Feb. 28 and goes through sundown March 1. The police have issued friendly reminder that underage drinking, drunk driving, and fireworks are all illegal in New Jersey.
In addition to a large population of Orthodox Jews in Lakewood, there are growing communities surrounding the township: Brick, Toms River, Jackson and Howell.
“Purim can be a very fun and exciting holiday. However, if safety precautions are not followed it can be very dangerous. Please be aware that the Lakewood Police Department will be around to keep everyone safe,” the statement said.
Police are also asking that celebrants designate drivers, and watch for children in the road during celebrations.
“Please be considerate to your neighbors during this time of celebration, especially in the late evening hours. By being aware of circumstances and taking a few precautions, we can have a safe and happy Purim,” the police said.
Purim is a festival commemorating the salvation of the Jews from the plot of Haman, the “prime minister” of the Persian Empire under King Ahasuerus. Haman’s plot was foiled and the Jews were allowed to defend themselves against their enemies. The account is recorded in the book of Esther.
